The 2008 Seymour High School Marching Band will conclude a full week of band camp with a Friday evening concert at the school’s football stadium.

First-year SHS band director Rhett Butler put his troops through the annual mid-summer band camp this week. The SHS band members should be well-versed in what Butler expects from them by the end of band camp.

One band parent, Tom Fitzharris, said his son, a sophomore flute player, has been arriving at the camp at 8 a.m. this week and not getting back home until around 9 p.m.

Despite the long hours, the morale among the members of the SHS band seems to be at an all-time high, according to Fitzharris, who said he also serves as the band’s unofficial public relations source,

“Those kids are so excited about getting started with Mr. Butler, their new leader,” said Fitzharris. “I’m can already tell that it’s going to be a fantastic year for the Seymour High School Marching Band.”

Fitzharris said Friday evening’s free concert will last about 20 minutes and is slated to start at 7.

“Basically the band will give the community a preview of what this year’s show at the concert Friday,” he commented. “In the past it’s been more of a chance for parents to come and see what their kids have learned in band camp but this year we’re going to kick it up a notch and make it a show that the entire Seymour community is urged to attend.”
