Knoxville is gearing up to dance the weekend away at the 2010 Tennessee State Dance Championships, which will take place Feb. 12-13 at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. Dancers, ranging in ages five to 19, from all over Tennessee will head to Knoxville for a chance to win in their division. Every type of dance, from hip-hop and jazz to ballet and musical theater, will take place at this exciting event. There is also a category dedicated specifically to teachers of dance.
On Feb. 12, free dance classes will be offered at 6:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Marriott to registered participants.  Two classes will be instructed by accomplished Broadway performer Judine Somerville. Judine has appeared at Radio City Music Hall as a “Rockette” and in several Broadway productions, including Hairspray.
“I’m proud our event is in Knoxville and I’m excited that our talented dancers will get to enjoy the city. The Knoxville Civic Auditorium is a fantastic venue I’m sure the dancers will enjoy performing in,” said Dan Lipps, National Director of State Dance Championships.
In its second year, the Tennessee State Dance Championship is a chance for dancers from all across the state to perform in a positive and encouraging environment. It is also a chance for dancers to experience the thrill of a real-life competition, with experienced judges, on-time performance schedules, and helpful feedback.
Tourism officials with the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation (KTSC) project that the championships will bring more than $650,000 of economic impact to the Knoxville/Knox County area.
For more information on the competition, contact Dan Lipps, National Director, at (843) 357-7484 or information@statedancechampionships.com.
