More than 2,500 people in Seymour have already cast their votes in the 2008 presidential election, and Election Day is still more than a week away.
The early voting poll was open Oct. 15-21 in Seymour, and will remain open in Pigeon Forge through Oct. 30. More than 8,800 people throughout the county cast their votes in the first week of early voting, including about 2,500 in Seymour, said Ronee Flynn, deputy administrator for the Sevier County Election Commission.
“We’ve had a really good turnout,” she told The Seymour Herald. “We’ve seen about 1,000 more early voters at this point than in previous elections. The increase we’re seeing is because this is the first time early voting has taken place in Seymour for a presidential election.”
The first time early voting took place in Seymour was during the county general election and state primaries in August.
“This will help relieve congestion at the polls on election day, that’s for sure,” said Flynn.
Flynn said things have gone smoothly throughout the county thus far during the early voting period, including the polling site at the Seymour First Baptist Church on Chapman Highway.
“We really appreciate the church letting us use their facility,” said Flynn. “Everybody seems pleased that we’re there.”
Flynn said the location for early voting can change from election to election, depending upon facility availability. The Seymour branch of the Sevier County Public Library System on West Macon Lane served as the polling site in the August election.
“Everything has gone really well in Seymour and across the county,” she said. “We have really good workers in Seymour. They have been great.”
Although early voting ended in Seymour this week, it will continue through Oct. 30 at the Sevier County Election Commission Warehouse on Dolly Parton Parkway.
Election Day, which for presidential elections occurs every four years on the first Tuesday in November, is Nov. 4. The results for early voting will not be released until Nov. 4.

Great to see so many people are going out to vote. If people don't vote they shouldn't complain. I'm glad they made early voting available to Seymour residents. Thanks election office!
