Five occupants were asleep this morning when they were awaken by the Seymour Volunteer Fireman who arrived to put out the fire and more than likely saved their lives.
At 05:09 A.M. the SVFD was dispatched to 932 Knight Rd. for what was thought to be just a fence row on fire.
As it turned out, the firefighters arrived to find a 30’ x 50’ home on fire.
According to the reports, the flames were about 30 feet high upon arrival. The home was occupied by five residence, all were asleep.
The firefighters awoke the occupants and three removed themselves without assistance.
One of the occupants exited from a door and two from a window.
Firefighters Keith McCroskey and Mark Warren entered the home to find moderate smoke conditions and removed two occupants.
All five occupants were unharmed and refused medical treatment. The fire was under control at 05:27.
The fire appears to have started around a pool deck area and extended onto an attached covered porch and then breeched through a sliding glass door into the home.
The 911 call came from unknown passer by.
A smoke alarm was found in the residence but didn’t have a battery in place. The firefighters took the opportunity to install two smoke alarms prior to them leaving the scene.
The scene was turned back over to the property owner Bill Welch

Good work Seymour Volunteer Fire Department!
God knows what we are called to do and I am so proud of the SVFD because they lay their lives down for people they don't even know everyday!!! Keith McCroskey is my boyfriend and I know how hard it can be sometimes, but I feel honored to know someone who is so passionate about what they do and what better a reward than knowing you saved someones life...
Both got The Medal Of VALOR for there acts on this day..
