Mathematics is not a careful march down a well-cleared path, but rather a journey into a strange wilderness full of numbers and mindboggling equations. Mathematicians have an extraordinary ability to perform methods of mathematical equations that lead them to great achievements.
The Brentwood and Ravenwood Mu Alpha Theta Chapters from Brentwood, Tenn. will host the 39th National Mu Alpha Theta Convention July 19-24 at the Knoxville Convention Center. Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-year College Mathematics Honor Society, and its purpose is the promotion of scholarship and enjoyment and understanding of mathematics among high school and two-year college students.
Approximately 550 of the top high school mathematics students from all over the United States and 100 secondary mathematics teachers who sponsor My Alpha Theta chapters will attend the convention. Additionally, two chapters from South Korea will compete at the convention.
The attendees will compete on three different levels in several types of mathematics contests, such as individual and team ciphering, a hustle team competition, a quizzle team competition and a puzzle competition. In addition to the competitions the students will attend sessions with speakers on a variety of mathematical topics.
Trophies will be awarded to the students for their performances in the competitions, and some will receive scholarships for their service in the area of mathematics.
