Two new certificate programs have been added to Walters State’s production horticulture program. The certificates emphasize landscape management and horticulture.
“These new programs were developed in response to student feedback,” explained Dr. Nicole Cardwell-Hampton, associate professor of greenhouse management at Walters State.
“This will enable entrepreneurs to gain a certificate that can be used to promote a landscaping or gardening business. The certificate programs take two semesters to complete and can be taken while a student is working,” Cardwell-Hampton said.
The certificate in landscape design will provide students with a working knowledge of professional landscape techniques. Students will also learn the latest horticultural technologies through valuable hands-on experience. This certificate covers plant materials, soil, pest control, maintenance, irrigation and design. The certificate also includes preparation for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture restricted-use pesticide certification.
The certificate in horticulture offers students the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of plant growth and development and an overview of the horticulture industry. Subjects include turfgrass, soil, plant material, pests and production.
