The Seymour Eagles Baseball Booster Club held their Lead Off Banquet last Saturday at Seymour Heights Christian Church.
“It was to kick off the season,” said Seymour Middle School Physical Education teacher Scott Norman. “We have three middle school teams, sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade, and then we have Varsity and Junior Varsity at the High School, so we just try to get them all together.”
During the banquet there was a special appearance by “Elvis”, “Barney Fife”, “Gomer Pyle” and “Goober Pyle”, among others.
“It was just a great time,” said Norman, who added that the event drew a crowd of about 250 people.
Former Seymour athlete Scott Galyon was the event’s featured speaker.
Galyon grew up in Seymour where he played football, basketball and baseball at Seymour High School. He signed a football scholarship to play linebacker for the University of Tennessee during his senior year.
After he played at UT for four years, Galyon was drafted by the New York Giants and played for seven years in the NFL, four with the Giants and three with the Miami Dolphins.
Scott then moved back to Tennessee in 2003 and worked as a volunteer football coach for the Seymour Eagles.
Scott currently serves as the Lakeway Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes Representative and is married to Chasity, who is also from Seymour. They have two children, Elijah and Gracie Mae.
“He talked to the players about staying focused, facing challenges and not falling into the wrong crowd,” said Norman. “He also told them to enjoy their high school careers because they will be over before they know it.
“The entire banquet was just a great way to start off the season.”
