Who’s On First

The new website unveiled by the Sevier County School District is a wonderful addition and something the board, staff and superintendent can all be proud of.

Located at www.sevier.org the easy to navigate site is the home for 2,000 professional, paraprofessional, and auxiliary staff members serving in twenty-five schools in the county.

To be specific, in Sevier County, there are four primary schools, two intermediate schools, four middle schools, seven elementary schools, four high schools and four specialty schools.

One of the goals of the Superintendent, Dr. Jack Parton, is that the website will be a tool to increase communication between students, parents, community members, and educators. And it shows.

No matter which school your child attends, there is either a school specific website, or specific information on that school.

According to one report, 82 percent of families with a household income of over $75,000 per year had Internet access by the end of last year, while 38 percent of households with incomes below $30,000 per year were online, and practically every school has computers somewhere. There is no doubt about it, it’s an important part of education.

Each school is responsible for their own website and its maintenance.

The vast difference between each school’s website is somewhat disparaging. With such a wonderful tool at their disposal, some of the schools need to focus more attention on their sites.

I’m certain it’s no easy task to stay on top of all the functions necessary to run a school. Maybe one of the classes can take it on as a project each quarter or semester.

Embracing the website as a great tool is just another alternative in the journey of change that moves upon all our lives each and every day.

Like the tides of the ocean, no matter how much people want things to stay the way they are, change will crash upon us.

The key is whether we control that change or let the change control us.
