free thinking

The freedom of speech has never guaranteed anyone the right to be heard.  Sometimes what is heard does not appeal to everyone.  Not all commentaries, jokes or skits are for everyone; nor will everyone view the same material in the same light.  Certain media outlets take great pride in preaching about those things to which Americans are allowed to acknowledge.  This same shepherding tactic is used in local government.

Two weeks ago, on Last Comic Standing, a reality television show on NBC, Richard Belzer gave a lecture to a contestant from Alabama about his skit.  The contestant's skit was based on a dogfight between an American fighter pilot and a Japanese fighter pilot.  Rather than simply saying that the material was not too funny, he referred to the contestants humor as “post World War II, late-40's humor” that “had no place in 2008” because it had “ethnic references.”  Then minutes later, he was laughing at a lady from Chicago, of Korean, descent poking fun at her family using the exact same ethnic humor that he chided the other contestant for using.  He even took a moment to praise her and tell her it's okay for ethnic humor in the realm of individual ethnic groups or for ethnicities to make fun of themselves.

Now the “serious” media has a new controversy over Barrack Hussein Obama and the cover of The New Yorker magazine.  This cover shows Barrack in Muslim apparel giving a fist-bump to his wife, Michelle.  Michelle has been given a huge afro and an automatic rifle slung over her shoulder.  They appear to be in the Oval Office with a picture of Osama Bin Laden over a fire place which has an American flag burning in it.

Various outlets are telling Americans that we should not find humor in this.  The Obama camp had just weathered an internet campaign that pointed out Obama's Muslim background so they are up in arms about this.  The editors at the magazine even had to explain that the art is a satirical reflection of the fear-mongering already being perpetrated against the Obama's.  This is how coastal media elitists think that conservatives view the Obamas.

However, the media outlets were silent when Condoleeza Rice was portrayed in editorial cartoons as a slave or Aunt Jemima.  No one was up in arms when Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was called Uncle Tom Justice from the title of a 2001 Time Magazine article by Jack E White.  No one told Americans what to think about these public jabs as they were being fleshed out.

Knoxvillians were told recently that they did not need to know the intricacies of local politics which led to ousters and changes in the way Knox County/Knoxville conducts business.  Sevier Countians are always told they do not need to put much thought into the hiring and replacement policies in taxpayer-funded positions.  Far too often we allow others to cow us into silence with phrases like, “You can't think like that!” or  “You shouldn't laugh at stuff like that!”  Agree or disagree, individuals must think for themselves, perhaps then this community can analyze and fix some of its own problems.

Yes, one should not just accept pat answers. One should think for themselves and teach their children to do so as well. Wonder how that applies to the school system in Sevier county and to Sevier county government?

My inspiration for this came when I was questioning what was going on at Sevier County High School with my son. In conferring with High School Supervisor Larry Stott. I pointed out that my son had decent grades and no disciplinary problems; but, when he came into contact with a particular teacher, his grades started as an F in that 1 class and by the end of the semester, all of his grades got progressively worse. I stated that spiraling showed an obvious problem and it appeared to be centered around that 1 class. To which he replied, "I'm not going to let you think like that!"

Right or wrong it is not his place to tell me HOW to think. I would guess that a great many parents have been told "HOW" to think by other "leaders" in the school system. We know that what children think is unimportant to the schools, what the schools consider important is how busy children can appear. See Board Policy #619. 2/3 of the grade is busy work (home or class) while 1/3 of the grade is TEST!!!

Then I see all of these media types trying to be my "moral" compass be determining humor for me? These are the same people who created the Britney Spears with no panties, Drunk and drugged Lindsey Lohan, Miley Cyrus semi-nude- in- the- shower, Vanessa Hudgens nude- for- boyfriend- camera- phone- pics teen idols. The last thing America needs is these types of people trying to tell the rest of us how to think.

#3 Amen to that! commented, on July 21, 2008 at 1:32 p.m.:

Amen Travis! Yes, the school system tries to tell parents what to think. They try to imply that problems experienced are simply an isolated instance to you and your situation, when in reality when you or your child have a so called problem with a teacher, often many children or parents have had conflicts with that particular teacher too. Often there are patterns and common characteristics established by substandard teaching personnel, which the Sevier county Board of Education and central office employees, refuse to acknowledge.

There have been teachers who have name-called children and referred to elementary school children as "Miss Piggy" and/ or "slutty" without consequence. Where in the Sevier county teacher contract does it say to engage in classroom management by belittling or berating children? This is simply abuse.

There are many of us that think for ourselves and recognize that this sort of conduct is substandard and grounds for termination.

There are some of us that simply will not back down. You obviously are one of those too.

#4 Amazing... commented, on July 25, 2008 at 12:22 p.m.:

When a teacher (an authority figure) berates, belittles or in any other manner causes emotional, mental or physical harm to a child that's called ABUSE and needs to be reported to the authorities. If a principal or any other staff person refuses to comply with an investigation or covers up, turns a blind eye to or in any other fashion interferes with the process that person should be seen as just as guitly or more so...it's called consiracy and obstruction.

#5 Confused commented, on July 28, 2008 at 9:01 a.m.:

Actually, it is not ABUSE, it is not a conspiracy, and it is not obstruction. It is "an isolated incident that has never happened before!" You can't think of it as an ongoing problem. You can't think that there are any problems at this school system.

#6 Sounds like - commented, on July 29, 2008 at 7:53 a.m.:

it may be time for the 'victims' to do some reporting to the TBI. If it's REALLY that bad of course....:)
