shs principal confirms randy moore has agreed to be next red devils basketball coach

Seymour Herald/Chris Silcox
Randy Moore, who has coached basketball at Seymour for the last 11 years, has reportedly agreed to be the next Halls Red Devils head coach. Moore's move was confirmed by SHS Principal Greg Clark Tuesday afternoon.

After 11 years at Seymour High School, Randy Moore will be wearing new school colors when high school basketball season begins in a few months.

Seymour High School Principal Greg Clark confirmed Tuesday that Moore informed him Monday of his intentions to take the open head boys basketball coaching position at Halls High School.

Moore could not be reached for comment at press time but Clark said it’s a done deal.

“Randy told me Monday morning that he had decided over the weekend to take the position,” said Clark.

Moore, a Sevier County High School graduate, arrived in Seymour 11 years ago as the head coach of the boys basketball team. When the girls head coaching position at SHS came open seven years ago, Moore surprised local hoops observers when he agreed to coach both the boys and girls basketball teams at SHS. Moore has since led the Lady Eagles to unprecedented success, including three state tournament appearances, while also leading the Eagles to a total of 73 wins over the last five seasons.

“I appreciate everything he has done for Seymour basketball,” said Clark. “I know it’s been very time-consuming for him coaching both teams but I think he done an outstanding job. We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

At Halls, Moore will be replacing Jason Webster, who coached the Red Devils to a 15-12 season a year ago but vacated the boys basketball position in favor of becoming the school’s athletic director.

Because Halls had yet to make an official announcement as of Tuesday morning, Webster was reluctant to go on record regarding the school’s newest head boys basketball coach..

“Officially, we have not made a statement regarding our vacant boys basketball coaching position,” said Webster. “But I can say we’re very close to naming a new coach.  We’ve talked to about 15 different candidates and I can tell you that Randy Moore is a very strong candidate.

“You’re from Seymour,” Webster said in the telephone interview, “You know what (Moore) has accomplished. You understand why we’d consider him a strong candidate. We expect to make an official announcement Thursday or Friday. We’re still waiting on the ink to dry.”

As for Clark’s newest dilemma, it’s a triple whammy. Not only does the Seymour Principal have to find a new boys basketball coach, he must also replace a girls basketball coach and a popular teacher.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Clark remarked. “We’re currently taking applicants. We expect to look at applicants for the rest of the week and hopefully have something done by the middle of next week. Anyone interested in applying should call the school.”

Maybe now Seymour can start rebuilding this program that is in shambles right now. Our team rooms are embarassing, there is no offseason program AT ALL, and there is as much talent not willing to put up with the abuse (walking the hallways) as there is on the 2 teams. Halls...enjoy!

Randy dont let the door hit you in the rear on your way out.You were a joke! Halls you are doing Seymour a great favor!!!!!!!!!

#6 former commented, on August 6, 2008 at 3:01 p.m.:

Maybe this new coach will realize the talent at the school and not abuse the players and run them off to play in rec leagues. Too many of the past graduating classes have had the talent to make a run at state but for some reason the best athletes were not on the team. Oh and don't let the same person coach both teams. That was the worst possible decision ever.

#7 Echo Former commented, on August 6, 2008 at 3:12 p.m.:

He's not the only coach at Seymour that has run off excellent players. Such a shame.

#8 shs alum commented, on August 6, 2008 at 5:05 p.m.:

Please dont let the same person coach both teams! Randy Moore was all about Randy. He never met a mirror he didn't like.He didn't care about the team,it was about his record and that he was only one of a small number of coaches that coached both girls and boys. Yet now he says in the paper that he could not do it any longer, give me a break! Seymour is the real winner in this and Halls he is now checking out your mirrors.SEYMOUR LETS PARTY!!!!! RANDY DO YOU NEED A MOVING VAN?

#9 former commented, on August 6, 2008 at 5:14 p.m.:

Randy has been a great coach for Seymour and has coached expecting every player to play their best at all times, not accepting any less. I will miss him!

#10 former player commented, on August 6, 2008 at 5:35 p.m.:

Coach moore was an amzing coach!!! if u havent played for him dont make a comment, just because some students can not take a coach telling them how bad they really sucked one day doesn't mean there is something wrong with the coach. Ya'll are just raising a bunch of wimps who can't handle the truth. He got the best he could out of every player, and I became a MUCH better basketball player because of him. If he was such a horrible coach, why did the girls team go to the state tournament 3 times? Ya'll are pathetic.

#11 former player #2 commented, on August 6, 2008 at 5:57 p.m.:

It was the girls talents..not Randys coaching ability !! He didn't care about the girls..he cared about his records & seeing himself on TV. I did play for him & it was the WORST 2 years that Ive ever played basketball in my life !!! There should NEVER be a coach that coaches both teams ! I hope to see more people tryout now that he is gone . Halls...youre in for it !!! Make sure you have a mirror in the gym so he can see himself before each game !! And maybe..just maybe..Randys Daddy might come back to show his coaching ability..haha WATCH OUT !!!

coach moore led us to become the district champs on the girls team this past year. we play better for him than any other coach. believe it, the girls are going to suffer do to this critical loss.

I havent played or had Coach Moore as a teacher but I know that he cared alot for his players. The girls I know that are on the team were very upset that he wasnt coaching and I have seen him around all the girls and you can feel the love. He is a great man and he will be missed dearly.

and for the people on here who cant make a nice comment, show some respect for him and dont leave nasty stuff like that.
very immature.

#16 CLINTSHARP commented, on August 7, 2008 at 12:26 a.m.:

I want to start by saying that Randy Moore is one of the greatest men I have ever met and BY FAR the greatest coach I have ever played for. Yes he is hard to play for, and yes he is hard on his players. However, those who could make it 4 years know what kind of man he really is! Those who could not make it (those momma’s boys and spoiled girls) have only themselves to blame. Randy is not in he business of babysitting. He is in the business of making people better basketball players and turning boys into men! I would not have changed my experience with him for anything. Seymour lost a great teacher, a great coach, and most of all a GREAT MAN!!!

P.S. I wrote my name because I am not afraid of confrontation because of what I write or do. RANDY MOORE ALSO TAUGHT ME THAT!!!

#17 don2332 commented, on August 7, 2008 at 1:21 a.m.:

Clint, this is Don Brown. My son is number 23 for the Eagles and my daughter is number 32 for the Lady Eagles. I, also, have not tried to hide my identity. You coached my younger son this past AAU season. I understand and appreciate you standing behind your former coach. I know you don't truly believe that just because every kid can't take a tongue lashing he is a "momma's boy. Is Shanen a momma's boy or are some kids wired differently?!?! The facts are still: he lied to me and my family about promising to be at Seymour coaching until my kids graduated; the team rooms and offseason programs for the teams/players are embarassing- there are kids who want to work and get better here in Seymour; and most of all Clint, Randy has not still met with or called any member of his teams to explain to them why or even tell them that he is/was leaving them. Surely he did not teach you that!!!!

#18 shs fan commented, on August 7, 2008 at 9:09 a.m.:

I agree completely with Don. Real men exhibit integrity, courage and self control. They tell the truth and are able to be both gentle and strong at the same time. I don't need a coach to "turn" my child into a man or woman. As parents we can handle that just fine. Players need coaches who teach them that life is about how you act when you win and how you act when you lose.If my child learns from a coach that swearing, throwing things, name calling and all other manner of foolishness is what makes you a "man" or a "woman" then they have been taught the wrong thing. We wish only the best for Coach Moore and his family. We are also glad for the much needed fresh start for the Basketball program.

#19 CLINTSHARP commented, on August 7, 2008 at 10:40 a.m.:

Don, I realized who you were so I was not speaking to you directly. I do realize why you are upset with Randy and in some degree you deserve to be. Yes, I agree that some kids are wired differently therefore it is hard for them to play for Randy. Some don't respond well to his type of coaching and some do. I happen to be one that did! And as far as promises not being met . . . maybe he was promised certain things as well that led him to leaving??? Whatever his coaching style or whatever his reason for leaving you cannot deny the mans success!!!

#20 Well.... commented, on August 7, 2008 at 11:11 a.m.:

I think we might see more of the same with the lack of discipline in the Seymour schools. Who would want to teach or coach in Seymour? Coach Clark sits in his office if anyone has any problems he tries to avoid them at all cost and only cares about Football and Baseball really, and he might say aloud differently, but actions speak louder than words. Then you have Householder he just tries to make everything run smooth at the first sign of turmoil he tucks tail and runs. So both athletic director and principle have no balls, and who would want to coach in Seymour?

We need administrators in Seymour that are firm and fair and not scared to stand up to parents when their child is wrong. Think are their any like that now?

Lets see at the High School other than Clark you have Jim Moore and Greg Haggard. And what do they do nothing Haggard did nothing as a teacher and is now an administrator because he is best friends with Clark. Moore replaced Bill Duncan I will just say this nicely Jim Moore is useless all he does is walk around campus looking big and bad and really accomplishes nothing that a vice-principle should we need complete overhaul in Seymour to get back to disciplining our children and we need to get principles that we trust to do it

#21 don2332 commented, on August 7, 2008 at 11:25 a.m.:

Clint, he told me Sunday night about what he said he was promised and appeared was not going to get. I have never and will never say that he can't coach the game or teach the game. For the record, I would respond to his "techniques" just fine and he was never as hard on my kids(except for u know who!!) as I was. It's over now. Hopefully we'll get someone who knows and teaches the game close to as well as he can and yet someone who is hungry and try to rebuild some pride into the program- behind the scenes.

#22 Jesco White commented, on August 7, 2008 at 11:41 a.m.:

If Coach Moore is such a good coach, then why didn't his alma mater, Sevier Co., hire him a few years ago when they had the chance. Halls really "Has It" now. No one has any business coaching 2 teams but his ego wouldn't let him give one up. Halls girls coach better watch their back. Good Riddance

#23 to Well.... commented, on August 7, 2008 at 12:35 p.m.:

How can you say this this men give there all to the children of our community have done so for years. Their own children even go to the school so they surely give there best. Being an administrator is not an easy job but i think these men you accuse do a great job.

Keep up the good work Greg and Jim

Lets see, where do i start? First i have known the Moore's since the 6th grade! I would say that Randy is one of the best men i have ever met! He is a great coach, sure he likes to win, sure he likes to yell but thats Randy, Thats the way he's "wired"! It works for some, not so much for others! One thing that i don't understand is that people keep talking about him being obsessed with his records or his ego, but why play sports or compete in anything unless you want to be the best, he takes pribe in his accomplisments as would anyone that has as many as him! I can only speak for me and some of my former teammates that i am still very close to, that we would not have changed a moment playing under THE COACH RANDY MOORE! Congradulation to Randy And Halls High School!

#29 not my real name commented, on August 8, 2008 at 8:50 a.m.:

At least #26 had the guts to put his name on his entry. All of you coward trash talkers don't have the guts or don't have enough confidence in what you have to say to identify yourself. I'm not going to identify myself either because I'm at work and I'd probably get in trouble if the boss knew how I am spending my Friday morning. I wish Randy well at Halls. He's certainly done a lot for Seymour High School. I think SHS fans and alums owe him a bit of gratitude. I hope Seymour goes after a proven winner with prior HS coaching experience. But here's betting they'll bring in a young guy who can relate well to the kids. Regardless, it'll be interesting to see over the next couple weeks what happens with the SHS basketball program(s). The coaching hires, of course, are huge for the future of SHS basketball.

#30 Corey Husketh commented, on August 8, 2008 at 10:19 a.m.:

"Congratulations" to you two that out of everything that has been said the only thing you could come up with is a spelling error! And again CONGRATULATIONS to Randy and his family!

#35 Emily Golden commented, on August 9, 2008 at 12:49 a.m.:

I was not a player on Coach Moore's team but I was in two of his classes in high school. He was an amazing teacher and I happened to learn a lot in those classes. I do believe people are entitled to their opinions and should be allowed to express what they want. But I also believe in something called respect. I think commenting on a newspaper article by bashing a former teacher and the school system itself should be saved for a bathroom wall. And it is a shame that parents would be the lead of such nonsense. Good thing to teach your kids. Good Luck Randy Moore and family. And Good Luck Seymour High School on finding coaches and a teacher.

#36 don2332 commented, on August 9, 2008 at 8:21 a.m.:

Emily, I am glad that you had a good experience in his classes. I hope that someone you trust does not make a promise to you that leads to an important decision in you and your kids life, only to have that person you trust break that promise only a short year later.

#37 Emily Golden commented, on August 9, 2008 at 5:13 p.m.:

Unfortunately, that happens to everyone in the course of one's lifetime. No it's not fair or just. I don't even know if most people even deserve it. I have no idea what happened to this team or your experience. But what I do know is that it is a fact of life. And yeah, it sucks.

Did he pinky promise you? LOL!! wow promises are broken, grow up. And as for haha, WOW! How old are you, 12? Making fun of spelling errors...you're real cool. I played for Randy and he's an awesome coach, he's like a second dad to me so don't yall DARE say he did not care for his players. If you did not play for him thAn(haha) I suggest you keep your disrespecting comments to yourselves. You guys are grow ups, act like it. Show us how to be real men and women because bashing a former coach and teacher is childish and in no way, shape, or form shows us that! And as for the team rooms..that's the players fault. It's called responsibility and the players are supposed to clean it themselves. We had to run when the team room was messy. And now as of talent that's "roaming the halls," haha that's funny! I believe that Randy was an amazing coach and all the outsiders and parents that are mad need to get over it. What's past is past. He made me a better player and prepared me for college ball, which by the way, college coaches are just as tough, if not tougher than Randy so your children need to get used too(haha)it. High school ball is competitive, I would sure hate to have a coach that hated to win but was nice and understood their players. Everyone knows to keep a coaching job you have to win and he did that! Seymour did not treat him as well as he should have been treated and I'm glad e(haha) moved to a school that will treat him with the respect he deserves! Awesome job Randy!!! Your(haha) an amazing coach!!

P.S.-Haha, I left you a few spelling errors so you could critic them since you're an amazing speller!

#38 you said if you want to keep a coaching job you have to win. I guess thats why he's leaving seymour. Cause last season was absolutely horrible. As for a teacher....It was a fun class and he's a nice guy but you didn't learn jack.

So what...He went from coaching two teams(which he was GREAT at and put all his time into) to coaching one team. I think if any of us went from coaching two teams to one we would all have alot of extra time that we would not know what to do with it! Give me a break!!!

Randy Moore is a great person, and you people are being awfully rude. Give him a break. He isn't "perfect". Nobody is. I have never played for Randy, but I know he was a great coach & he cared for his players. He is a great guy, no matter what you people say. I love him. He is like a dad to me, & I respect him. No matter where he goes or what he does, I think everyone should cut him a little slack & congratulate him. It's his life. He can make his own choices without everyone putting their two sense in. Randy is a great dad, a great coach, a great teacher, and a great man. So all you haters, keep it to yourselves. As long as Randy is happy, that is all that matters. Yes, I'm sure a lot of people are disappinted, but life goes on. Everything happens for a reason. So don't go talking bad about Randy Moore or his family. They are great and caring people. And I have their back every step of the way. :]
