Seymour finished Saturday's seven-on-seven, two-hand touch football camp at Maryville College with three wins in four games.
The fifth and final contest of the day was canceled due to bad field conditions, according to SHS head coach Gary Householder.
The games at the camp were controlled scrimmages with no contact. The offenses consisted of a quarterback, running backs and receivers. The defenses used primarily linebackers and defensive backs. The teams alternated possessions after a pre-determined number of snaps with no running plays allowed.
Householder feels like his Eagles got a nice jump on fall drills, which begin this week, at the one-day camp that featured some 25 other teams from as far away as Chattanooga.
"I was pretty well pleased with how we performed," said Householder. "I was particularly happy with our receivers. I thought we caught the ball real well with not many dropped passes."
Going into the day Householder was anxious to gauge which of the Eagles' three top candidates to win the starting quarterback job this fall would move into the lead going into fall drills.
When it was all said and done, however, Householder said he wasn't sure if the Eagles' coach staff was any closer to naming a starting quarterback than it was going into the day.
The Seymour coach said senior Ryan King, junior Ryan Chadwick and sophomore Dustin Fain  each had their respective moments Saturday, but it'll be a while yet before a clear-cut leader emerges from the pack.
"All of our quarterbacks did some good things Saturday," said Householder. "I thought all three had bright spots. Some  do some things better than others. It's hard to get three of them enough reps."
Although Householder has shown in past seasons he's open to using more than one quarterback if he feels the situation calls for it, the coach said he'd prefer to have one starter when the dust settles after fall camp.
"We're looking for one to step up and be the starter," Householder added. "It's always nice to have more than one that can play though because you never know what's going to happen with injuries over the course of a season."
While official statistics were not kept Saturday, all three of the SHS quarterbacks got ample playing time, rotating in and out on each offensive possession, with each throwing multiple touchdown passes on the day.
Other than getting some work for the quarterbacks, the Eagles also laid the foundation for coverage and passing schemes at Saturday's camp.
"I thought we broke on the ball real well on defense," Householder added. "I was pretty well pleased with the way our defensive backs handled themselves.
Householder said senior defensive back Jacob Kirby has the most experience of any of the returnees in the Eagles' secondary. The coach said Kirby made several fine plays in coverage Saturday. Householder noted that Blake Overton, Brandon Timmerman, Taylor Bush and Eric Tucker also had their moments in the defensive backfield at the passing camp.
Junior linebacker Keegan Newport is a player that looks to have picked up where he left off after a stellar sophomore campaign a year ago, judging from his perfromance in Saturday's non-contact situations.
"Keegan Newport was excellent at breaking on the ball Saturday," Householder commented. "He's very good in coverage and has shown to be a very good run-stopper too. He's becoming an all-around football player."
A noticable no-show at Saturday's passing camp was senior tailback Chase Turner. Householder said the Eagles' leading returning rusher is rehabbing an ankle injured over the summer in an off-the-field incident.
"He'll be in a walking boot for three weeks," said Householder. "We hope he'll make it back before the season gets started."
Turner was sidelined for a time last season with an injury substained in a skiing accident.
The Eagles open the 2008 grid at Heritage on August 22.
