seymour middle school lady eagles win championship

The Seymour Lady Eagles Middle School basketball team won the Area Three Championship game for the second year in a row.  Janet Johnson’s veteran group of girls defeated Newport Middle Lady Warriors  by a score of 41-31. This improves their record to 17-4 and advances Seymour to the sectional tournament.
Seymour fell behind early but regained their composure.  The score stood 11-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Eagle defense came to life the second quarter led by Lexi Justus and Mariah Flynn.  Creating offense from defense, the Lady Eagles went on an 8-4 run to tie the score 15-15  two minutes before the break.
After tough defense, Seymour guard Lauren Johnson drove for a layup to give the Lady Eagles a lead at the half 19-16.
At the end of the third period Seymour led 26-20 after some intense defense on both sides of the ball.
In the final quarter, Flynn took control scoring 8 of her game-high 16 points. This gave the Lady Eagles a double digit lead with four minutes go and the game was history.
Seymour was also led in scoring by Kayla Tillie and Lexi Justus with 7, Victoria Nelson and Erin Thomas with 4, Lauren Johnson and Breanna Green added 2 apiece.
Head coach Janet Johnson had this to say,” Most of these girls have been playing together since the 4th grade. They have worked hard and they deserve this honor. They have improved in their individual play and as a team, achieving goals no other Seymour team has. I have been very pleased with our progress. All these girls are good students and good kids.”
Coach Johnson’s eighth grade daughter Lauren plays on this team. Coach Johnson had this to say,
“ It has been a real honor to coach my daughter since the 4th grade. It is special when a parent gets the rare opportunity to do that.”
