The Seymour Eagles baseball team opened the 2010 season at home with a win over the visiting South-Doyle Cherokees by a score of 4-2. It was their first win in the IMAC Conference over a 2-AAA District opponent.
Brandon Timmerman started on the mound for the Eagles, going 6 innings totaling 7 strike outs, only 3 hits and a walk for the win.
Keegan Newport came in as the relief to finish the game in the seventh. He entered in the top of the seventh with a runner on first, no outs and a 2-0 count on the batter. He retired the side with a S-D pop out, strike out, and fly out.
Ben Whisler put the Eagles on top by 2 early in the first with a two run homer, scoring Logan Jenkins  who was on 1st base with a lead-off single.
Timmerman hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to put Seymour up for good. He went 2 for 3 at the plate for the game.
Seymour head baseball coach Scott Norman had this to say, “We were tight. The first game of the year is a playoff atmosphere; starting with South-Doyle and out first IMAC District game. We usually play them on down the schedule. But, I would much rather play bad and win than to play good and lose.”
Next up for the Eagles will be South-Doyle again away, and The Smokey Mountain Invitational on March 18th, Thursday through Saturday.
